Gregg Engineering Pipeline Simulation Tools for Gathering Systems

A Gathering System can be an extremely complex pipeline to model, as new wells come into service and older ones become decommissioned, it may seem like an insurmountable task just to get an accurate record of the system’s current status in the midst of these ever changing dynamics, let alone predict the impact that time will have on the system as it evolves.

Our suite of core applications and add-on modules will allow you to track these changes and calculate your system’s performance as it exists today, as well as accurately project its future potential. We have designed an entire suite of applications that will help you run your pipeline system from both a hydraulic, as well as a business perspective.

    • Compare scenarios with comparison tools, and easily switch between scenarios.
    • Scenarios are synchronized so that when new facilities are added to the model, all scenarios are updated (as opposed to having to add the new facilities to every working copy of the model).
  • Calibrating and Tuning
    • Reconcile the pressures throughout your entire pipeline system and recalculate efficiencies.
    • Quickly and easily identify areas of a pipeline that most likely have issues, such as liquid hold up, which need to be investigated further.
    • Reduce up to 99% of overall system errors in a matter of seconds.
  • System Analysis
    • Model all 18 major gas components such as C1, C2, CO2, H2S, and even custom components, using advanced Equation of State calculations.
    • Calculate the heating value, specific gravity and gas temperature based on composition,
    • Analyze the individual components as they intermix in the pipeline in order to identify any potential need for rebalancing the gas.
  • Revenue Tracking
    • Model both revenue and expense dollars traveling through the pipeline system for all simulation types.
    • Cumulative revenues and expenses are tracked so that overall profitability over time can be estimated.
    • Revenues and expenses for Gathering systems can be modeled for new wells coming online, new laterals put into service, old wells taken out of service, and gas well production declines can also be calculated.
  • Decline Analysis Tools
    • Calculate the projected life expectancy of gas wells based upon historical flow volumes.
    • Producers can estimate and forecast gas well production.
    • Midstream pipeline companies can forecast flow rates coming from nodes and meters connected to one or more gas wells.
    • Generate ARPS or PLE decline curve coefficients for all of the wells or groups of wells.
  • Integration Tools
    • Import and export data between:
      • Excel
      • Databases (Access, Oracle, SQL Server, etc.).
      • GIS (Shapefiles)
      • SCADA systems (OPC)

Tools for Building and Operating Your Model

The most sophisticated tools for running your simulation are nothing if the model hasn’t been constructed upon a sound foundation, which is why we have created an array of functionalities able to create models from data that you already have, as well as fill in the blanks of any crucial information which may be missing.

The ability of our software to import model configurations which had originated from a GIS system allows for the automatic creation of the model’s connectivity and other pipeline parameters, reducing build time significantly. And elevations, which are key factors when calibrating and tuning a model, especially when looking to detect potential liquid hold up, can easily be acquired with the click of a button. For Gathering systems, holdup is unpredictable and can change from day to day as liquids build up and then get pushed out, so the recalibration process needs to be performed routinely, which means it also needs to be fast and easy. Luckily we have ways of helping you do all of that.

When you need to know not only how your pipeline system is operating, but what exactly is flowing through it as well, we can get you the answer. Our applications can model all 18 major gas components in addition to custom ones, using advanced Equation of State calculations. This information is invaluable for not only calculating the heating value, specific gravity and gas temperature, but for the capability to analyze the individual components as they intermix in the pipeline. This give operators the opportunity to identify any potential need for rebalancing the gas or additives that may be required in order to bring the quality into spec.

Additional types of build tools that we offer, such as Google Maps, will allow you to view your entire system on top of its actual terrain with such detail that you will be able to actually see your lines connecting at the well pad.

Determining the System’s Potential

It goes without saying that a pipeline model which has been built with optimum efficiency also stands to become the most profitable as well. This philosophy is why we supply the tools needed to calculate the best possible options and projections for your system, which can then help you determine how to yield the highest rate of return on investment.

If your task is to calculate the potential costs of constructing new lines, wouldn’t you like the ability to run side-by-side comparisons of multiple, alternate scenarios against one another in order to compute the results from all of the variances?  And wouldn’t you like those computations to occur at unprecedented speeds? Well, you can do that with our software.

And how about the capability to model the flow of revenue and expense dollars traveling through the pipeline system in order to estimate the current profitability of the pipeline? Or even better, project the future profitability where new wells are modeled coming online, new laterals put into service, gas well production declines are calculated, and old wells taken out of service. Our software can track revenue and determine which areas of the system are generating the highest yields.

Our Well Decline Analysis is another business centric application which will prove invaluable to anyone modeling a Gathering System in that the program will calculate the projected life expectancy of gas wells based upon historical flow volumes. Data from the inception of the wells, or from any stable point in time, are used to calculate the future depletion of the system. This information can be used by Producers to estimate and forecast gas well production, and by Midstream pipeline companies to forecast flow rates coming from nodes and meters connected to one or more gas wells.

Hydraulic Modeling Meets Business Processes

Advances in technology, such as the software solutions which Gregg Engineering develops, have made the pipeline modeling process much more efficient, faster and far more accurate than anything else available on the market. What’s more, we have designed all of our software to integrate effortlessly with the rest of your business processes by just as easily importing data in, as it does exporting data back out again. We know that it is not sufficient to use simulation technology to just model pipelines, but rather to use it in conjunction with integration and automation tools to help solve business problems on multiple levels. This type of intel is critically important for a company to remain competitive and profitable.
